Isabel Hanberg
Christian Writer and Creative
What am I working on?
the prayerful creative writing you’ve been craving.
Listening for God’s voice
I want my readers to be wholly available to hear from the Lord through my writing. Never replacing his Holy word, but sharing whatever he has for me to share. My Imagery Blog is a compilation of prayer-inspired scenes, like a devotional, where I am personally talking to Jesus, and he shows me something new.
My hope is that you will hear Jesus speak directly to you through these scenes. I want to be obedient and share what he has placed on my heart.
Check out my Imagery Blog to get an idea of what I’m talking about. And always seek God’s voice above my own and anyone else’s.
the christian creative genre
There’s something I’ve been searching for.
I think there is never-ending potential for christian storytellers within the genre of adventure stories. I’m sitting here trying to figure out how to express my excitement for it, and I don’t even know if I can. My ideas for different worlds are exploding behind my eyelids as we speak.
As I’ve gotten older, my search for a specific kind of adventure genre, with God at the center, that showcases the truth of why we have been put on earth by our loving creator, with a slightly older main character, (20s, maybe?) deeper life lessons and harder topics, without any spice, but a good amount of action, moral weight, and God’s truth rooted throughout the story, has gotten ever more urgent. I want to replace my ineffectual social media consumption with stories, again, like what I used to devour when I was 13.
I know that books like this must be out there, and indie authors are producing quality stories all the time, however, I yearn for a very specific thing.
(Please feel free to send me reading recommendations!! You can email me by clicking on the Contact tab, or message me on Instagram.)
I will continue to search for books of this specific genre. While I search, I’ll also write. I feel deeply called to enter into this genre myself as an artist.
Numerous, loaded journals from age 11 to 27 have proven to me that I am no doubt meant to write, and the urgency to share this thing that God has given me is growing to a point.
So. I am working on something that is going to be amazing.
As a young reader, I was endlessly inspired by the sense of magical freedom found in books like The Percy Jackson series, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Hobbit. I grew up captivated by the self-reliance of characters in Little House on the Prairie and the lesser-known Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson, and the Angel Experiment book series by James Patterson. (That last one was a huge influence on my writing voice as a kid!) Fantasy stories like The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, and The Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville sparked my imagination to travel to different worlds. I also could not get enough coming-of-age series, like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, and Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick, with rich character details, real life issues and intense personal growth.
Other books I cannot fail to mention here that have greatly impacted my love for books include A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, Isabel of the Whales by Hester Velmans, The Giver series by Lois Lowry, and the Nancy Drew books. (Let it be noted that I picked up Isabel of the Whales at Barnes and Noble when I was 11 years old because it had my name in the Title.)
All the elements of these stories have deeply resonated with me since I was very young, and these stories, along with many others, still find opportunity to influence my thoughts, daily.
My Work-in-progress
The ending is unpredictable. The theme challenges your calcified opinions on relationships. Your heart is racing, where are you going? You’ve never been here before, but something is oddly familiar. You can taste it in the air. What is that, cinnamon?
You want to think about the way God made you, and where Jesus is.
I want readers to hear the crescendo of a heartbreaking music score like you would find in the most colorful of movies, crashing drums and whining winds when they are reading my book, and I want them to see Jesus’ face, and feel moved, and like they can’t help but be inspired to pick up their Bibles.
(Please pray for me, I can’t write something that good without the help of the Holy Spirit!)
This is an action book, written with sci-fi fantasy energy and a hint of christian allegory. There is a side plot of romance, and plenty of mystery and intrigue.
20-year-old Anna, confronted with a moral dilemma, is supercharged to flee her hometown and leave herself behind. She then stumbles into a royal mess of a situation and ends up lost in the woods with a stranger. A very odd stranger. Anna wanders through the forest, finding nuggets of clues about her bizarre family situation, and begins to believe that the world is bigger and grander than she thought, and things are not what they seem. And she does, in fact, desperately want to get involved.

Who is this Isabel?
Growing up, my interests were horses, drawing horses, reading about horses, saying hello to my imaginary horses, and tea parties with cute tea cups. Also I wanted to be a princess. My big dream was to live the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, in a dress, with an apron, baking bread, with a long braid. I couldn’t imagine anything better.
Now I’m 27 years old, and my big dreams still involve being good at baking bread, and wearing dresses, except that I really do love my sweatpants and sweatshirts, and I only love horses from a distance. And I would really love to write really great books. And as a daughter of the King, I legitimately am a princess.
I’m currently working as a cake decorator, and it is definitely fulfilling my need to be creative at work. The other day I got to pipe a white tiger face on a cake and I think it turned out pretty good. (I’m still learning, though!)
Other art mediums I am obsessed with are the classic paper and pencil, ceramics, and craft type materials like cardboard, glue, and balsa wood. (I’m working on a “book nook” depicting an old medieval town in the snow during Christmas!)
What do I believe?
Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and the Son of God. I believe he is part of the Holy Trinity: God The Father, Jesus The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
One God.
(1 Peter chapter 1)
I believe the Holy Spirit moves and works today.
The Bible is infallible, inspired by God, and transcends the bounds of time.
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus paid my debt, died and came back to life, and he’s coming back one day (Hallelujah!)
God is perfect, doesn’t make mistakes, loves perfectly, knows everything, and holds everything in his hands.
(Hebrews 13:8, Revelation 1:8)
He is perfectly trustworthy, the reason we experience any goodness, and we are so blessed that he is a good God.
(James 1:17, 1 John 3:20, 1 John 4:8)
